Joseph R. Vadus (M'57-SM'59) received the B.S. degree in electronic engineering from Pennsylvania State University, University Park, and the M.S. degree in ocean engineering from Long Island University, Greenvale, NY.He is Manager of the Special Projects Staff in NOAA's Office of Oceanography and Marine Services, Rockville, MD, and has headed the NOAA OTEC Ocean Engineering Program activities since 1976. At NOAA, he has also managed the Advanced Technology Program in the Office of Ocean Engineering and was manager for Technology in the Manned Undersea Science and Technology Office. Prior to NOAA, he was affiliated with Sperry Corporation for 20 years in managment and senior engineering roles in research and development of advanced ocean systems, deep submergence vehicles, submarine instrumentation and control systems, and radar and data processing systems. He has been awarded seven patents with three pending.
Mr. Vadus is chairman of the U.S. Panel on Marine Facilities for the U.S.- Japan Cooperative Program in Natural Resources and heads Marine Technology activities in the U.S.-France Cooperative Program in Oceanography. He serves on the Executive Boards of the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society and the Marine Technology Society.
