Richard W. Miksad received the B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Bradley University, Peoria, IL, in 1963, the M.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, in 1964, and the Sc.D. degree in oceanography from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, in 1970.

From 1970 to 1972 he was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Applied Mathematics at Imperial College, London, England, where he conducted research on the nonlinear dynamics of transitioning flows. From 1972 to 1974 he was on the faculty of the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, Coral Gables, FL, where he conducted research on ocean-wave generation. In 1974 he joined the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin as a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering. In 1985 he spent a sabbatical leave at Imperial College, London, England, and in 1987 he was Program Director of the Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics Program of the National Science Foundation. His primary research interests are in the area of hydrodynamic instability, nonlinear dynamics of transition to turbulence, and wave forces on offshore structures. He is currently Chairman of the Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics Department at the University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Miksad is a member of Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Phi, Phi Tau Sigma, Sigma Tau, Phi Kappa Phi, and Omicron Delta Kappa. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas.
