George Frederick Earl was born in Melbourne, Australia, on July 5, 1943. He received the B.Sc. (Hon) degree in 1964 and the Ph.D. degree in physics in 1971, both from the University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia.Since then he has been employed at the Defence Research Centre, Salisbury, S.A., Australia. His principal role has been to lead the section responsible for frequency management support of the JINDALEE OTH-B HF radar. He was involved with ship detection experiments in the early phase of the project, and has an ongoing interest in the environmental and instrumental factors that limit the performance of HF radar.
