John M. Gravley was born in Dallas, TX, on December 11, 1951. He received the B.S. degree from Stephen F. Austin University, Nacogdoches, TX, in 1975 and the M.S. degree in computer science from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, Lafayette, in 1990. He is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree in computer science at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette.

After receiving his master's degree, he was self-employed as a programmer and consultant, providing services for several local companies. His research interests are in software reengineering, software engineering, software metrics, and programming languages.
