F. Joseph Fischer received the B.S. degree in mechanical engineering (with highest distinction) from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, 1962, the M.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Rice University, Houston, TX, in 1964, and the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in applied mathematics from Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, in 1964 and 1967, respectively.

In 1967 he joined Shell Development Company, the research and development division of Shell Oil Company. Since that time he has been engaged in a variety of research activities in the broad areas of applied mechanics and applied mathematics. Much of this work has been directed toward the dynamic response of deep-water structures such as tension-leg platforms. Other research activities have included shell analysis of intersecting tubes, drill-string mechanics, geomechanics of salt-dome caverns, thaw and subsidence of permafrost, vortex-induced vibrations, thermal buckling of pipelines, and advanced composites for offshore applications. He has also supervised research groups concerned with all aspects of drilling technology and pipeline fluid mechanics. He is the author or more than 30 technical papers.

Dr. Fischer is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
