V. Umapathi Reddy (S'68-M'70-SM'82) received the B.E. degree in telecommunication engineering and the M.Tech degree in electronics and communication engineering from Osmania University, Hyderabad, India, and the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, in 1962 and 1963, respectively. He received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 1971.

During 1963-1965, he worked at IIT, Kharagpur, India, on the speech bandwidth compression project, and from 1965 to 1967, he taught at Osmania University. Before joining IIT, Madras, India, as an Assistant Professor in 1972, he held short-term appointments at Bell Laboratories, Holmdel, NJ, and the University of the West Indies, Trinidad. During his stay at IIT, Madras, he supervised a sponsored project in radar signal processing. In December 1976, he moved to IIT, Kharagpur, as a Professor in the Radar and Communication Center. From October 1979 to March 1982, he was a Visiting Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Stanford University, Stanford, CA. Since April 1982, he has been with Osmania University as a Professor of Electronics and Communication Engineering and Head of the Research and Training Unit for Navigational Electronics, funded by the Electronics Commission, Government of India. Since January 1986, he has been with Stanford University on a leave of absence from Osmania University. His earlier research interests were in fast convolution algorithms, spectral estimation, and adaptive algorithms. More recently, he has been working on emitter location and optimum beamforming.

Dr. Reddy is a Fellow of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers of India. From 1976 to 1979, he served as a Member of the National Scientific Subcommittee on Detection of Low Flying Targets, and Consultant to the Avionics Design Bureau of Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd., Hyderabad, India, in the area of radar signal processing. From 1983 to 1984, he served on the Technical Committees of the 1983 International Radar Symposium and the 1984 International Conference on Computers, Systems, and Signal Processing, both held at Bangalore, India.
