Florian Schirmer was born in 1937 in Germany. He studied physics and geophysics at the University of Hamburg, Hamburg, West Germany. He earned the Master degree in physics and the Ph.D. degree, both from the University of Hamburg.At the Department of Geophysics and later at the Institut für Meereskunde, University of Hamburg, he became a researcher in the field of remote sensing, especially in underwater and sea-bottom acoustics. Since 1979 he has been involved in remote sensing using electromagnetic waves.
Dr. Schirmer is a member of the German Hafenbautechnische Gesellschaft.
