H. Thomas Rossby was raised in Stockholm, Sweden, where he graduated in Applied Physics Engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology. He received his Ph.D. in Oceanography from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1966. After two years as a research associate there involved with the float program, he moved to Yale University. He became a full professor at the University of Rhode Island in 1975.
