E. C. Shang graduated from the Department of Physics, Theoretical Physics Division, Beijing University, Beijing, China, in 1958.
Since then, he has worked on underwater acoustics and wave propagation at the Institute of Acoustics, Academia Sinica (IAAS), Beijing, China. He was a Full Professor and the Deputy Director of IAAS during 1982-1986. He worked as a Visitng Professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California at San Diego, at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and at Yale University from 1982 to 1987. Since 1988, he has worked at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Science (CIRES), the University of Colorado with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Environmental Technology Laboratory (ETL), and he is a Supervisor of CIRES at ETL. His research interests include shallow-water acoustics, source localization in waveguides, modal ocean acoustic tomography, mode coupling associated with mesoscale structures, and wave propagation theory. He is co-author (with Prof. Wang Dezhao) of the book Underwater Acoustics (Beijing, China: Science Press, 1981, in Chinese) and has published more than 70 journal papers. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Computational Acoustics.
Prof. Shang and his colleagues at IAAS received the National Natural Science Prize (1982 and 1990) twice in China. He is a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America.
