Melbourne G. Briscoe attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where he received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1963 and a Ph.D. in fluid dynamics and applied mathematics and mechanics in 1967.After a post-doctoral year in Brussels, Belgium, at the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics, he took a four-year position with the Oceanography Group of the NATO SACLANT ASW Research Centre in La Spezia, Italy.
Dr. Briscoe came to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in 1972 and began work on IWEX, an internal wave experiment that used twenty of the then-new Vector Averaging Current Meters, suspended from a deep-sea three-legged stable mooring. His association with the Buoy Group at Woods Hole continues to the present, and he is now planning a two-year observational program (1982-84) of currents and temperatures in the upper layers of the Sargasso Sea using the new Vector Measuring Current Meters as well as other instruments.
