Y. Y. Wang received the B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Qing-Hua University, Beijing, China, in 1958.

Since then, she has worked on underwater acoustic image system, multibeam echo sounder system, scale-model experiments on normal mode filtering, and computer simulation of acoustic wave propagation at the Institute of Acoustics, Academia Sinica, Beijing, China. She worked as a Visiting Scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison during 1982-1984 with Prof. C. S. Clay on acoustic wave propagation and source localization in waveguides. She has been a Research Associate at the CIRES, University of Colorado, in 1989, working cooperatively with the Environmental Technology Laboratory, NOAA on global scale ocean acoustic field simulation and monitoring.
