Philip N. Denbigh was born in 1940. He received the B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the Universities of Edinburgh and Cambridge in 1960 and 1965, respectively.

His Ph.D. research on electron diffraction was continued at Bell Telephone Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ, but he returned to the U.K. in 1966 to commence work on satellite communications at Marconi Space and Defence Systems. His activities in sonar began in 1969 following an academic appointment to the University of Birmingham. His early work on bathymetric sidescan sonar was primarily at the high-resolution 3-D imaging of the sea bed and one innovation, as yet unexploited, was to use the depth measurements to artificially introduce parallax into one of two sidescan records that were otherwise identical, thus creating a stereoscopic pair of sidescan images. From 1981 to 1988 he was Professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Cape Town where his research activities included acoustic fish stock assessment, acoustic correlation logs, electronically focused sidescan sonar, and animal localization techniques. In 1988 he joined the School of Engineering at the University of Sussex where his interests have extended to hearing, speech enhancement, and speech recognition.
