George T. Russell received the B.Sc. degree in electrical and electronic engineering from King's College, University of Durham, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Newcastle in 1967.
He is Professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, U.K., where his research from 1970 has spanned nonlinear control systems, signal, and image processing. In 1981, his work on subsea robotics demonstrated an automatic guidance and control system for a tethered submersible. This led to the application in 1985 of an intelligent control system incorporating video and sonar image processing, together with the simulation of a vehicle and sonar image modeling, to be used in autonomous submersible systems. This work provided the foundation for the U.K. EPSRC Marine Technology Directorate managed program of research into the Automation of Subsea Tasks (1986 to 1992), for which he was the Managing Agent. Several national and international research projects have evolved from this work.
