Edmund J. Sullivan (SM'92) earned the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering and the Ph.D. degree in nuclear physics in 1965, 1967, and 1970, respectively, from the University of Rhode Island, Kingston.

He served on the research and technology staff of the Naval Undewater Systems Center until February, 1985, when he was appointed Head of the Signal Processing Group at the SACLANT Undersea Research Centre in La Spezia, Italy, where he performed both theoretical and experimental research in matched-field processing, bispectral analysis of radiated noise, and passive synthetic aperture processing. He held this post until July, 1988. For the two years prior to the SACLANT appointment, he was the Signal Processing Editor for the JOURNAL OF THE ACOUSTICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA. He is an Associate Editor for IEEE JOURNAL OF OCEANIC ENGINEERING and CIRCUITS SYSTEMS AND SIGNAL PROCESSING. His present position is that of Senior Staff Scientist for the Physics and Technology Division at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. He has published numerous journal articles, two encyclopedia articles, a book chapter, and several NATO and Government reports covering the subjects of underwater acoustics, signal processing, nuclear physics, and electromagnetics. He is the holder of several patents in the areas of underwater acoustics and array processing. His present interests are in polyspectra, model-based signal processing, and synthetic-aperture array processing.

Dr. Sullivan is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and is listed in Who's Who in American Science and Engineering and American Men and Women of Science. He is also a member of Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Pi Sigma, the American Physical Society, and the American Society of Physics Teachers. He was also the recipient of the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society 1994 Distinguished Technical Achievement Award.
