James D. Irish received the B.S. degree in physics from Antioch College, Yellow Springs, OH in 1967, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in oceanography from the University of California, San Diego (Scripps Institute of Oceanography) in 1969 and 1971, respectively.He joined the University of Washington, Seattle, Department of oceanography's research faculty in 1972 and worked on internal wave measurement and theory in relation to acoustic transmission in the ocean. He joined the University of New Hampshire in 1979 and was associated with the Department of Earth Sciences, the Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans and Space, and the Ocean Engineering program. In 1991 he joined the Department of Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution as a Research Specialist. His professional interests include bottom pressure instrumentation and measurements, moored temperature and conductivity observations, conditional sampling techniques utilizing intelligent data systems, data processing (especially tidal analysis), development and use of microprocessor-controlled data systems, GOES and ARGOS telemetry systems, and data telemetry using acoustics, packet radio, and buoyant data capsules.
Dr. Irish is a member of the American Geophysical Union, the Oceanographic Society, and the Marine Technology Society.
