Stergios Stergiopoulos (SM'92) received the B.S. degree from the University of Athens, Greece, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in geophysics from York University, Toronto, Ont., Canada, in 1976, 1977, and 1982, respectively.
Presently, he is an Adjunct Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the University of Western Ontario, Ont., Canada, and a Senior Defence Scientist at the Defence and Civil Institute of Environmental Medicine (DCIEM), North York, Ont., Canada, of the Canadian DND. Prior to this assignment and from 1988 to 1991, he was with the SACLANT Centre (SACLANTCEN), La Sapienza, Italy, where he performed both theoretical and experimental research in sonar signal processing. At SACLANTCEN, with Dr. Sullivan from NUWC he developed an acoustic synthetic aperture technique that has been patented by the U.S. Navy and the Hellenic Navy. From 1984 to 1988, he developed an underwater fixed array surveillance system for the Hellenic Navy in Greece and there he was appointed Senior Advisor to the Greek Minister of Defence. From 1982 to 1984, he worked as a Research Associate at York University and in collaboration with the U.S. Army Ballistic Research Lab (BRL), Aberdeen, MD, on projects related to the stability of liquid-filled spin stabilized projectiles. In 1984, he was awarded a U.S. NRC Research Fellowship for BRL. He is Associate Guest Editor for the IEEE JOURNAL OF OCEANIC ENGINEERING and has prepared two special issues on Acoustic Synthetic Apertures and Sonar System Technology. His present interests are associated with the implementation of nonconventional processing schemes in multidimensional arrays of sensors for sonar, radar, and medical tomography systems. His research activities are supported by Canadian-DND Grants, by Research & Strategic Grants, a NATO collaborative research Grant. Recently, he was awarded the EU-ESPRIT/OMI grant as a technical manager of a project called "New Roentgen." He has been a consultant to a number of companies, including STN Atlas Elektronik in Germany, Hellenic Arms Industry, and Hellenic Aerospace Industry.
Dr. Stergiopoulos is a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America.
