Sarah J. Bass was born in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, in 1971. She received the Honors B.Sc. degree in physics from the University of Ottawa, Canada, in 1994 and the M.Sc. degree in physical oceanography from Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada, in 1996. She is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Cambridge, U.K.
