Clifford L. Trump was born on October 25, 1944, and raised in Madison, WI. He received the B.S. degree in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1966 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in physical oceanography from Oregon State University, Corvallis, in 1974 and 1976, respectively.

He was with a biological oceanography group at the Université Laval, Sainte-Foy, PQ, Canada, from 1976 to 1979. He has been with the Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC, since 1979. The main thrust of his work at NRL has been the measurement and understanding of currents in the upper 100 m of the ocean using acoustic Doppler current profiler systems. For the last few years, his measurements have been taken closer to the surface in coastal waters and correlated with the output of various remote-sensing instrumentation systems.
