John Hughes Clarke received the B.A. degree in geology from Oxford University in 1983, the M.Sc. degree in oceanography from Southampton in 1984, and the Ph.D. degree in oceanography from Dalhousie University in 1988.

He has worked as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography from 1988 to 1989 and as a Research Fellow at James Cook University, Australia, from 1989 to 1991. Currently, he is employed as a Research Associate as part of the Ocean Mapping Group in the Department of Surveying Engineering. University of New Brunswick, Canada. His work has focused on the use of acoustic imaging techniques to address questions about marine sediment transport. This has led him to focus on the use of combined bathymetric/backscatter swath systems. Most recently, his work has centered on the use of shallow-water imaging multibeam sonars to examine seabed roughness and quantitative backscatter characteristics as a means of classifying seabed sediments.
