Niels Skou received the M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering in 1972 from the Technical University of Denmark. He received the Ph.D. degree within the field of microwave radiometers and radiometer measurements in 1981.Since 1972 he has been with the Electromagnetics Institute of the Technical University of Denmark. After three years working on the development of radar systems for measuring the ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica, his interests turned towards microwave radiometry. In 1975-1979 he developed the scanning multifrequency airborne radiometer system of the Electromagnetics Institute. His research deals with microwave remote sensing, primarily within radiometry. His current subjects of research are radiometer measurements of sea ice and oil pollution on the sea, spaceborne radiometer systems, and development of new systems for specific operational purposes.
