Robert K. Hawkins received the undergraduate degree in honors physics and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in condensed matter physics (utilizing thermal neutron scattering techniques) from the University of Guelph, Guelph, Ont., Canada, in 1970, 1973, and 1979, respectively. His M.Sc. research was in the dynamics of pressurized gases, and the LINAC facilities at the University of Toronto, Ont., Canada, were used. His Ph.D. work was on water structure in clay minerals, and the NRU reactor at the Chalk River Nuclear Laboratory was used.He is currently a Research Scientist with the Data Acquisition Division of the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS), coming to CCRS as a National Research Council (NRC) Postdoctoral Fellow in 1978. At CCRS, he has worked in microwave-applications research including active and passive studies of the ocean, oil spills, sea ice, and agricultural land use. He has been increasingly involved with calibration and processing problems related to airborne microwave scatterometers, SAR, and radiometers.
