Gerald F. Appell receive the B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, New York, NY, in 1964.From 1964 to 1970 he worked as an Engineer for the Instrumentation Department of the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office, Washington, DC. Since 1970 he has been with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), serving in various organizations and capacities. Presently he is with the Ocean Systems Development Group, Office of Ocean and Earth Sciences of the National Ocean Service of NOAA. Recently, he has been associated with the development of ocean measurement systems, and has been instrumental in the development of acoustic Doppler measurement techniques and real-time systems.
Mr. Appell is Chairman of the Current Measurement Technology Committee of the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society. He recently was the Co-Guest Editor of a special issue of the IEEE JOURNAL OF OCEANIC ENGINEERING devoted to current measurement technology. He is also a member of the Marine Technology Society. He has authored or coauthored over 30 technical publications. He recently received the Department of Commerce Silver Medal Award for the development of the Tampa Bay PORTS System.
