Lyle C. Schroeder was born in Carroll, IA, on February 16, 1939. He received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Iowa State University, Ames, in 1961, and the M.S. degree in physics from the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA, in 1968.

In 1961, he joined the NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA, where until 1971 he conducted research on radio communications through reentry blackout, including experiments on flight spacecraft in 1963, 1965, and 1969. From 1972 until 1982, he conducted research on the relationship of surface wind to the microwave scattering cross section of the ocean, including experiments using the AAFE RADSCAT aircraft data and the SEASAT-A satellite scatterometer, and design studies for advanced scatterometer wind sensors. His present activities are the development and testing of large-scale deployable antennas for space applications.
