D. W. Hancock, III, received the B.S. degree in mathematics from East Carolina University, Greenville, NC, in 1970.

In 1964, he joined NASA Wallops Flight Center (WFC), Wallops Island, VA, as an electronic technician apprentice and completed the requirements in 1968. From 1970 to 1982, he was at WFC in the Applied Mathematics Section where he worked on the development of digital image processing systems for Earth resources remote sensing, real-time computer control for radar altimeters, and algorithms for processing altimeter data. Since 1982, he has been in the Observational Science Branch where he continues to work on radar altimeter processing, computer simulations, and office automation. During 1976 to 1979, he participated in the SEASAT-A radar altimeter program and is currently involved in the development of the TOPEX program.
