Edith A. Widder received the B.Sc. degree (magna cum laude) in biology from Tufts University, Medford, MA, in 1973, and the M.Sc. degree in biochemistry and the Ph.D. degree in neurobiology from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1977 and 1982, respectively.
She joined Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution, Fort Pierce, FL, in 1989, where she is now a Senior Scientist and Director of the Bioluminescence Department. Her research has involved the development of a number of instrument systems, including the HIDEX-BP on which she co-holds the patent and which is now the standard in the U.S. Navy for measuring bioluminescence in the oceans.
