David S. Burnett received the B.E.P. degree in engineering physics, with distinction, from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, in 1962, the M.S. degree in engineering science from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, in 1963, and the Ph.D. degree in applied mechanics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1969.

He has been with AT&T Bell Laboratories, Whippany, NJ, since 1970. He is currently a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff in the Special Ocean Effects Group. Throughout his career at AT&T Bell Laboratories, he has performed analytical studies in support of acoustical and mechanical designs for undersea systems. Projects have included installation of undersea cables, acoustically induced vibration of submerged structures, undersea sensor systems, and thermal buckling of optical fibers. Most of the studies have involved application of the finite element method. He has taught in-house courses at AT&.T Bell Laboratories on finite element analysis, and he provides consulting and support for finite element software. He is the author of Finite Element Analysis: From Concepts to Applications (Addison-Wesley, 1987).
