Michael R. Simpson has been the Senior Instrumentation Specialist for the California District of the U.S. Geological Survey, Water Resources Division for the last 20 years. He has published papers documenting instrumentation development in the fields of hydro-acoustics and arid-land micrometeorology. His specialty is flow measurement using hydro-acoustic instruments, and in 1989 he developed USGS software for calculating real-time river discharge using acoustic Doppler discharge measurement systems. His interests include acoustic velocity (and flow) measurement system hardware and software development and the measurement errors associated with such systems.
