CoverageThe CD-ROM set of 6 CD-ROMs (numbered 0 thru 5) is the Digital Archive of the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society (the OES Digital Archive). This includes most of the IEEE literature in the field of oceanic engineering, according to the OES Field of Interest (FOI). The FOI includes all applications of electrical and electronics engineering pertaining to all bodies of water. Design, testing and applications of water-oriented systems, subsystems, and components are also included, in addition to scientific, technical and industrial applications, or other activities that contribute to the field, or utilize the techniques or products of oceanic engineering. Technical ContentEach technical item, i.e., a technical article, a correspondence, a correction, a comment or a review, is captured in the Digital Archive. There are 9,587 technical items in the collection. All the technical items are stored in the DjVu format. The DjVu format allows for smaller size files and this reduction is obtained by a proprietary lossy compression algorithm. For more information on DjVu, please consult LizardTech's website. Although DjVu files are not individually searchable, they are indexed by the ASTAware search engine and the full-text of the articles is accessible thru the search engine. Technical Content PartitioningThe total collection is partitioned among 5 CD-ROMs. Each CD-ROM contains all the index files (author, subject, tables of contents, and minipapers) for the entire Archive. The article DjVu files are partitioned among the CD-ROMs according to the following table. CD-ROM numbered 0 contains the ASTAware search engine, the OES search index and ASTAware installers. It also includes a version of the DjVu plug-in software as well as Netscape and Internet Explorer browsers. You need this CD-ROM to install the ASTAware search engine and the OES search index on your local hard drive. You need only do this installation once. Once you install, you can run the search engine in conjunction with any of the CD-ROMs containing the indexes and the content.
Indexes and Hyperlinked NavigationThere are Author, Subject and Publications indexes for accessing the technical items. For each author, there is a list of papers published by the author in the Digital Archive. Under each subject word, there is also a list of papers. Moreover, there is a minipaper file for each technical item. This file contains abstract, keywords and intra Digital Archive references/citations as well as bookmarks. Minipapers give easy access for all the in-links and the out-links of the technical item. In particular, you can access a subset of references/citations from the minipaper file. These references/citations are hyperlinked to the technical items. All the index files and the minipaper files are in HTML format. ASTAware Search EngineA licensed full-text search engine is available from the ASTAware installation CD-ROM (numbered 0). This CD-ROM contains the ASTAware search engine and the search index. The installation program allows you to install the search engine and the search index on your local hard drive. We indexed titles, authors, abstract, and the full-text of ALL the articles on all CD-ROMs. As a consequence, although you will not be able to access all DjVu files while using a particular CD-ROM, you will be able to search the full-text of all articles from any CD-ROM while the ASTAware search engine is running from your hard drive. | ||
