Disabling the Auto-Insert Notification

Auto-Insert Notification is a Windows 95/98/NT/2000 feature that refreshes a CD-ROM automatically when you insert it into your CD-ROM drive.

Permanently Disabling Auto-Insert Notification for Windows NT/2000

You have to edit the Registry: DISCLAIMER: Editing Registry should be done very carefully, otherwise you might corrupt your system. Parity Computing takes no responsibility for such corruption. Nor does it encourage you to edit the Registry. Proceed solely at your own risk. If help is needed, contact a Microsoft Windows expert.

  1. Choose Start > Run, then type "Regedit" in the Open text box.
  2. Choose Registry > Export Registry File.
  3. In the Export range section, select All. Specify a filename and Save. This file will be your backup for Registry.
  4. Double-click the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder in the left side of the Regedit window, then open the following folders.
    System folder>CurrentControlSet>Services>CD-ROM.
  5. With the CDROM Folder selected, double-click the Autorun icon in the right side of the Registry Editor window.
  6. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, change the one to a zero in the Value data field. Ensure that Hexadecimal is selected in the Base section of the dialog box, then click OK.
  7. Choose Registry > Exit.
  8. Restart your computer.

To permanently disable Auto-Insert Notification in Windows 95/98

  1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > System.
  2. Click the Device Manager Tab.
  3. Double-click the CD-ROM category.
  4. Double-click the icon for your CD-ROM.
  5. Click the Settings tab.
  6. Deselect Auto-Insert Notification.
  7. Exit Device Manager and restart Windows.
