Installing and Activating the ASTAware Search Engine

Macintosh Users:

In addition to navigating the Digital Archive through the indexes, you can search for keywords in the text of the articles using the ASTAware search engine. The CD-ROM set comes with one license for the ASTAware SearchDisc search engine software (henceforth, ASTAware search engine) licensed from ASTAware Technologies Inc. To use the ASTAware search engine, you must first install once it on your hard drive. Please check the CD-ROM 0 contents for the exact location of the ASTAware installation software. Please refer to the licensing agreement before you install the ASTAware search engine.

Before you proceed, please

  • Make sure that you are running Macintosh OS 9.0 or higher and Netscape 4.5 or higher, or Internet Explorer 5.x. ASTAware search engine may not work on Mac OS X platforms.
  • Be warned that the ASTAware search engine may be slow on Mac platforms. Moreover, the ASTAware search engine may fail on queries that produce a large number of results unless sufficient memory is allocated to the ASTAware search engine application.
  • Make sure that you installed Java MRJ version 2.1 or higher. Note that you may not have MRJ installed even if you have a browser installed that can run Java. You can download MRJ from http://www.apple.com/java and install it. (Users of MacOS 8.6+ will find an appropriate version of MRJ on their original MacOS CD. Users of pre-8.1 versions of MacOS may be able to use the search engine in conjunction with older versions of MRJ available from http://devworld.apple.com/java/text/download.html, but no support is available for the use of this older software).
  • Make sure that any previous installations of the ASTAware search engine on your local hard drive are uninstalled.

Installtion

  • Insert CD-ROM 0 containing the ASTAware installation software.
  • Copy the installer for Mac (Install.bin) onto the desktop and double click on it. It may be necessary to use Stuffit Expander to expand the file. This will create an icon named SDUInstallerM. Clicking on this file will launch the installer.
  • You will be prompted to enter the location to copy the SearchDisc folder. Make sure that you have at least 300MB on your hard drive to copy the SearchDisc folder.
  • You will also be asked for the CD-ROM PATH which is the label of the CD-ROM. Use /OE as the CD-ROM path. This path name is the same for all CD-ROMs 1 thru 5.

Activating the ASTAware Search Engine

  • To activate the ASTAware search engine, go to the SearchDisc folder and click on the file named NRServer inside the directory SDCDSearch/astaware.
  • The user will be prompted to confirm the CD-ROM path, at which point the user should insert the CD-ROM containing the content.
  • Start your browser and load the file, index.htm, from the top level directory of the CD-ROM.
  • You will not see the "Exit SearchDisc" window on Mac as on Windows and Solaris.
  • Once the CD-ROM is inserted in the drive, you can then press the Enter link in your browser. This brings up the Digital Archive interface along with search facilities.
  • Please read the Section on Searching the Content Using the Search Engine for conducting your searches.
  • To shut down the search engine, you have to choose the NRServer application and Quit. For example, choose NRServer application from the top right corner on the main menu and click on the Quit option on the top left corner of the main menu.
  • You can use the CD-ROM without the search engine by opening the file start.htm in your browser.
  • If you need to change the CD-ROM to access DjVu files that are not on the current CD-ROM, please follows the platform-specific instructions for changing CD-ROMs.
  • Some versions of Netscape have trouble in some network environments. If the search engine seems to start normally, but your query never returns results (and gives an error instead in Netscape), try this: Look in your Preferences folder in the System Folder. If there is a "Hosts" file there, open it with SimpleText. Otherwise create a new file (somewhere outside the System Folder) with SimpleText. Add the following two lines to the file:
    localhost CNAME local.local.local
    local.local.local A 127.0.0.1

    If you just created this file (as opposed to editing an existing Hosts file), go the TCP/IP control panel. Under Edit, select User Mode "Administrator". Click "Select Hosts File" and select the file you just created.

    Now reboot and try the CD again.
