AB: Shallow-water sediment property data accumulated over 23 years is used to compile an extensive database from which empirical correlations among physical and geoacoustic properties are made. Measurements were conducted in diverse sedimentological environments on continental shelves, with 57 siliciclastic and 12 carbonate sites. The distinguishing property measured from cores collected in these environments is sediment grain size: sites varied from coarse sands to clay. Using standard regression techniques, we relate the parameters of sediment sound speed, sound attenuation, porosity, bulk density, mean grain size, grain sorting, and percent gravel. Of critical importance for valid comparisons is normalizing the measured values of sediment sound speed at all locations to a common temperature. Empirical relationships among measurements of seafloor parameters are valuable for improving the accuracy of acoustic remote sensing of the sea floor.
