AB: The Adriatic Sea is a sub-basin characterized by extreme air-sea interaction. The episodic bora winds blow fiercely in the wintertime across the shallow northern Adriatic. In addition to intensifying coastal currents in the Adriatic, these winds extract a significant amount of heat from the ocean. The goal of our work is to simulate and quantify the air-sea exchange using a high resolution nested two-way coupled ocean-atmosphere model. The COAMPS(TM)/NCOM system consists of a triply nested data assimilating nonhydrostatic atmospheric model whose inner 4 km resolution nest communicates with a primitive equation ocean model of 2 km resolution. Between fall 2002 and summer 2003 there were several field programs operating in the Adriatic Sea. These observations afford an unparalleled assessment of the Adriatic circulation and heat budget. Our modeling studies focus on evaluating the fluxes in one-way and two-way coupled simulations during a major bora event in early January 2003. Preliminary results of the evolution of the atmospheric and oceanic boundary layers over the course of the bora will also be presented.
