AB: Aircraft observations taken during the CBLAST field efforts have shown that small-scale (5-10 km) variations in sea-surface temperature (SST) are common events in the coastal ocean. For flow with long over-sea fetch, concurrent measurements of atmospheric turbulence show a clear correspondence between cool (warm) water and lower (higher) turbulence. Experiments are conducted with a large eddy simulation model to examine the sensitivity of the boundary layer to changing SST. Our interest is in relating internal, decoupled boundary layer development with SST and wind speed. Simulations are performed for a range of SST scales and wind velocities, and compared with observations from the CBLAST experiments. Flow parameters, such as the Monin-Obukhov lengthscale and boundary layer depth, are used to characterize the development of decoupled boundary layers.
