Coastal winds lead to greater biological productivity on shelves of eastern boundary currents due to upwelled nutrients.
Howev er, the facts that (1) very high winds can transport upwelled water off the shelf before the potential primary or
secondary productivity is realized, and (2) winds occasionally decline to zero or reverse lead to a complex dependence of
production on daily time scale temporal variability in the wind. We first present a simple, idealized physical model that
brings parcels to the surface and transports them across the shelf in response to upwelling winds and show how productivity
depends on varying levels of constant winds for different NPZ models representing different trophic pathways. We then show
how productivity depends onvariable winds. We compare levels of annual productivity estimated from an upwelling index to
those estimated from upwelling and uptake due to primary and secondary productivity, using buoy wind data from NDBC13
offshore of Bodega Bay, CA for the years 1981 to 2003. Accounting for uptake, especially that due to secondary productivity,
leads to a substantially different view of the dependence of biological productivity on wind.
