How do I setup my Macintosh OS X system for dial-in access to MBARI?

Follow these simple steps to setup:

  • Open System Preferences -> Network
  • Choose Internal Modem from the "Show:" drop-down menu and configure:
    • TCP/IP:
      • Configure = "Using PPP"
    • PPP:
      • Service Provider = MBARI
      • Account Name = <your username here>
      • Password = can leave blank or fill in
      • Telephone Number = 1-800-758-9798
      • Alternate Number = 1-831-758-9974
    • Modem:
      • Check the option "Show modem status in menu bar"
  • Click on Apply Now and quit System Preferences

To dial into the network:

  • Open the Internet Connect application (which can be found in Applications) or simply click the modem icon on your menu bar and choose Open Internet Connect
  • On the Configuration drop-down menu select Internal Modem
  • Service Provider should read MBARI and you should have a selection of Telephone Numbers to choose from.
  • Type in your password
  • Click Connect

To enter additional numbers, including special "dial-out" numbers:

  • Open the Internet Connect application (which can be found in Applications)
  • Click the drop-down menu next to Telephone Numbers:
  • Select Edit...
  • To add the number click on the Plus (+) sign at the lower left
  • Type the number and description
  • Click OK
