How do I configure my POP or IMAP e-mail client?

If you elect to use a mail client other than Outlook, configure your email client for POP or IMAP using the following settings:

  • SMTP server (aka outgoing mail server) - mail.shore.mbari.org, port 25

  • POP/IMAP server (aka incoming mail server) - One of the following:

    • imap.shore.mbari.org, port 993, Use SSL

    • pop.shore.mbari.org, port 995, Use SSL

  • Username and password: use your Windows login username and password

SSL is required on the incoming (POP and IMAP) connections.

When choosing whether to use POP or IMAP we strongly recommend IMAP. Using IMAP will keep your email on the server so that it will be backed up automatically, and you can access it from multiple computers and the Exchange web interface. Using POP will download all your mail to your local computer and it will only be available while you're using that computer. If you do not back up your POP mail store yourself, you could lose your mail history in case of hard drive failure or accidental deletion.

Note: As mentioned in another FAQ, the I.S. group supports email access using Outlook.
