MARS 2021 and new MOBB extension cable: Updated: 2020/01/22 Doug Neuhauser, doug@seismo.berkeley.edu MBARI plans to upgrade the existing MARS undersea science node in 2021. The updated node plans to provide improved network and timing support. a. Network to each user port will provide 10/100/1000 Base T. b. Network will support IEEE-1588 (PTP) timing to all MARS user ports. For MOBB, we plan to install a new 3+ Km extension cable containing fiber for gigibit ethernet between the MARS-side SIIM and the MOBB-side SIIM. The new MOBB-side SIIM (Super-SIIM) will provide 12-pin ODI Nautilus connectors (used on current MARS science node) to multiple user ports at the MOBB site to provide connection to MBARI hydrophone and other new experiments as well as the connection to MOBB electronics enclosure with a short cable with 12-pin to 8-pin OID undersea mateable connectors. Current discussion/plan is to provide only 48V DC rather than 48V DC and 375V DC from the Super-SIIM at the MOBB site.. Network interace on the user ports will be copper 10/100/1000 BaseT that support IEEE 1588 PTP using IEE 1588-compliant router in the Super-SIIM in conjunction with IEEE-1588 support from the MARS sciece node. Fiber from the extension cable will terminate in the Super-SIIM (?) Not clear exactly how the extension cable with fiber and copper will actually connect to the Super-SIIM.
