Subject: salinity Date: Fri, 13 Jul 2001 11:57:43 -0700 From: "Etchemendy, Steve" To: M-DUC Alias , "Chavez, Francisco" CC: "Grech, Chris" Dear Francisco and MDUC, I have considered the current situation where DMO personnel perform lab analysis (specifically salinity) and have concluded that this is an inappropriate function for a Marine Operations group. Please reconsider this apportionment of duties. It is not a Marine Operations function to maintain lab analysis equipment or do lab work. I suggest that the scientists who need the salinity sample data budget to send the samples out to an external lab or make other arrangements. Additionally, I feel that it is inappropriate to provide CTD support for non MBARI ship cruises. Externally or internally funded ship days should have money allocated for a CTD technician. The continued growth of equipment and responsibilities makes it increasingly difficult to provide technicians (especially unfunded) for external ship cruises.
