Charter

The MBARI Data Users Committee will consist of a standing committee advisory to the President and to Division Directors on matters concerning the institute's data sets. The M-DUC takes primary responsibility for implementation of MBARI's data policy (see attached).

Committee Functions

Specific functions of this committee will include, but are not limited to:

  1. Developing a long-term strategy for MBARI data collection, storage, and dissemination.
  2. Determining which data streams are "routine," and therefore can be released following quality control, and which are "developmental," and are therefore under the control of the PI for 1 to 2 years.
  3. Forecasting major expenditures to management and advising whether management has allocated sufficient resources for the tasks at hand.
  4. Advising management on priorities and impact of proposals that involve any discontinuation of existing data collection activities or introduction of new data streams.
  5. Encouraging the submission of proposals from appropriate MBARI personnel for needed improvements and upgrades.
  6. Advising on how best to disseminate MBARI data to the maximum extent that is reasonable.
  7. Ensuring that a reasonable mix of science, engineering, TSD, DMO, ITD, and outside user input is sought for decisions involving routine data sets, and then communicating those to all interested parties -in the institute by posting notes from M-DUC on the MBARI web pages.
  8. Advising on the types and format of data needed by internal and external users.
  9. Setting standards for quality control of mooring, ship, and ROV data streams and advising on their utility, in collaboration with the MUC (Mooring Users Committee) and ROV-UC (ROV Users Committee), as appropriate

Committee Membership

M-DUC will consist of institute personnel from science, engineering, TSD, DMO, and ITD. The MBARI president will select the members with advice from the division directors. Members nominally serve for 2-year, renewable terms, at the pleasure of the president.
