improving interactions:

recognize range of projects- small science driven, major (infrastructure) engr initiatives. identify and publicize where project sits on spectrum.

structure large projects with more incremental implementation
steps. ensure that large projects include short term payoffs.

involve engr staff in traditional science cruises
 - have a role in the science experiment

improve relevance of new tech push projects to current science interests. (how to address idea: presentation before proposal to platforms group -- start in platforms group)
Mark says cold proposals won't go through -- already must lobby with science constituents. Vetting proposals is a slippery slope. Problem is not so much killing bad proposals, but generating good proposals that stand out among them. They don't get enough good ones.

reorg: reasons for reorg
discipline not consistent with sci world view (experiment->measurement->instruments->systems)

new org: encourages focus on science fields, provides formal focus and point of contact for science/engr interaction

building connections: 
informal discussions (3-5 each engr and sci) to talk about issues
- future science directions, needs
- emerging technologies and trends
- evaluation, comment, prioritization of platform related proposals
- monitoring progress, mid course corrections
- (retiring old platforms?)

strategic plan should form backbone of propsal eval process; rejecting outlier proposals

- should have role in commenting on platform-related propsals

- scientists need to be involved (w/ rights come responsibilities...)

- tech briefings (engr present latest tech in key areas) occassionally, after conferences e.g.
- science briefings 

- friday afternoon round tables -- free ranging, teach-ins, gossip

- oceanography 101
- tag teams : engr member follows a group/lab and present to platforms group
- participate in cruises in any role
