Objectives: 
- Develop strategies addressing SWOT items
- Advance draft of Platforms Strategic Plan (Roadmap)

Agenda:
- welcome scientists
- comments, deliverables schedule, the process and current objectives
    Jan 7.:  SWOT analysis for each group report.  Create outline for strategic plan & road maps.
    Jan 21: 'Road maps' from each group.
    Jan 28: Over-arching 'road map'
    Feb 11: Revisions complete.
    Feb 18: Out for review
    March 21-23:  Offsite (Engineering & selected invitees)

- Review of SWOT analysis w/ discussion, revisions, additions, deletions
  - groups report on sections
    Strengths (mcewen,mellinger)
    Weaknesses (chaffey, mellinger)
    Opportunities (oreilly, hamilton)
    Threats (headley,oreilly)

- Strategy Development: 
  - Operating Principles to build upon strengths, mitigate weaknesses, leverage opportunities, avoid external threats
  - Not implementations (but we want to capture these)
  - match strengths:opportunities
  - address weaknesses and threats
  - Strategies are general, implementations are specific (but capture implementation ideas)
  - It's all good: we're brainstorming, half baked ideas are OK

- Develop strategies for each SWOT issue
  - group 1:chaffey, mellinger, hamilton, paull, kolber
  - group 2:headley, oreilly, mcewen, zhang, rock, chavez
  - best effort to stick to strategies rather than implementations (corral implementation ideas)
  - develop strategies for each SWOT (40 min) 
  - summarize to group (5 min each w/ discussion)

  - Map strategies into Strategic Plan outline (example from SDS):
    Focus on [solutions to] technology-limited marine-science research
      Execute crisply 
      Process standards
      Coordinate with/track/leverage/promote solution standards
      Develop roadmap
      Focus on the right problems to solve
      Leverage expertise
      Collaborate to mitigate lack of expertise
      Hire for projects ???
    Complement, rather than duplicate
    Demonstrate the worth of our efforts
      Multi-year project roadmaps
      Promote standards externally
      Produce open source reference implementations
    Insist on teamwork
      Enable teamwork
    Promote effective communication, cooperation, and COLLABORATION
    Ensure optimum scientific use of our assets and capabilities
    Seek external advice on the quality of our work
    Expand our relationships with regional institutions
    Transfer our successes to the marine research community
    Communicate with the public

    - sharpen wording: good bullets, not prose
