Kolber: what do we want to measure? that is basic question that drives answer. mechanism for transporting sensors to measurement area is important. combine features of existing platforms may illuminate new platform classes. e.g. hybrid auv/glider auv/rov power harvesting from ocean, intertial generator. propulsion and power are interesting. bellingham: ALPS case studies are good thing to come out of workshop. some written by MBARIans. chavez: time,space scales. strategy depends a lot on these. scalable solutions are desireable. important to choose optimization carefully. power proportional to velocity^3 how do we cover the desired scales with a given amt of energy/cost? isntrument payload is important : volume, weight, energy. temporal vs spatial resolution vs measurement resolution vs meas duration economics and meas scales seem like big driver. need presence of entire basin over longer period how to meas: lots in perimeter? less in middle? OSSE (observing system simulation experiment): to try to determine what's needed to do an experiment. that kind of modeling seems important. mesoscale processes (eddies) very important; 3x3 degrees not adequate. detecting long term trends can do, even w/o resolving processes. ** a portfolio of platforms is required ** event detection, plume following. plume-following data is hard to interpret. (eulerian vs lagrangian) someone building moorings that sample aerosols (johnson knows builder) stationary w/ greater coverage vs mobile assets also want to know baseline, steady state "before" condition coastal ocean fluxes: what is contribution to interior/coastal? assume you need some moorings, some gliders, some auvs... need to draw on diff optimizations to get data (johnson) BSOP (float that sits on bottom and comes up sometimes for meas and telem) small, 5 lbs. (bellingham) vertical only AUV, does profile, docks on bottom (easier than gen docking) is AUV always more efficient than glider? buoyancy is key. glider dives have trouble in high currents (auv could cross currents and then act like a glider) platforms that intelle out of battery
