What are the most important products of the workshop? What do we need to do to prepare? - how do "our" initiatives fit together? - how well are they integrated with other initiatives? - how well do they answer the questions for the presentations? What are the platform-centric initiatives? (*) How are they connected to non-platforms initiatives? What initiatives are missing? pH Observatory (Barry, Johnson, Chavez, Scholin, Zehr) Biogeochemical Oceanic Nitrogen Observatory (Chavez, Johnson, Ryan, Scholin, Zehr) * Predicting Coast Ocean Response to Global Change (Bellingham, Chavez) Anthropogenic Ocean Fossil Fuel CO2 Invasion (Brewer, Barry) * A Portable ROV System (Robison) Ocean Research and Biodiversity Explorer (Connor, Edgington, Haddock, Matsumoto, Robison) - exploiting extant database Virtual Observatories and Visualization (Edgington) Data Automation and Knowledge Discovery (Edgington) * Underwater Solar Flyer (McGill) - Brett originally involved - Proposal rather than initiative? - distributed low cost sensors aspect of it may be worthwhile - why is mcgill presenting? - mobile biosa - easy to deploy (maybe bigger system needed) - long duration very important - biomimetic propulsion? mostly gliding, sometimes swimming fast - many new ideas * Exploiting MOOS Mooring Capabilities (Chaffey, Paull) * Stealth ROV (Robison) - upper water col upper 100m of water col - good camera - samplers (detrit, suction), requires custom vehicle - no manips, - small, lightweight - deploy from small vessel (e.g. zephyr) - smaller than tiburon, larger than phantom Marine Animal Tag (Robison) - lou zeidberg's and barbara block concept - not so much an MBARI initiative - would like to see improvements Notes: - what is marcia after? respond to external committee, shape future of institution. tech related? tech driven? science drivers now more prominent? - scholin says it's not the final list - a fishing expedition to get best ideas and see how they can work together - proposal abstracts indicated many carbon cycle efforts on parallel fronts -> this work could be integrated into an initiative - fly-away ROV proposal discouraged - justifiable in-house? dangerous to be purveyors of hardware (harbor branch) - 4500 m Tiburon? not an iniative... - pH and nitrogen observatories mention plugging into MOOS and MARs -> possible synergy there - shallow MOOS with EOM - WHOI has a shallow mooring with cable (seismic work in grenada) - MOOS targets the benthos, remote sites - shallow applications may not be the bullseye - are we getting the signal to use it closer to home? It's expensive to operate here day to day. - outer bay may be a good science driver - monterey bay beyond smooth ridge may be a good target - exporting is important - money is tight, but MOOS is relatively inexpensive - the instruments and sensors are very expensive - ORION/OOI etc.: viewed as competition by scientists outside, even though NSF trying to integrate observatory efforts - timing of ORION/OOI is important; must be able to show it works. - WHOI is very strong in this area; if we can show that we're a major player in this arena, will make for better collaborations with WHOI - carbon cycling is an initiative level (goes back to MBARI's roots) - event detection hasn't been done yet mostly because there hasn't been a pull to do it are there any AUV initiatives missing? endurance (length of mission)? docking station is important to this? isn't endurance related mostly to battery technology? we still need to address issues with autonomy, reliability, resource management? what about initiative to do science planning infrastructure? - it is an important issue, comparable to physics - but not an initiative level thing, it's operational/project level thing stealth ROV is interesting in that it may be an unexploited niche; WHOI is not doing this.
