Hi Bill -

The smallest filter I can find (so far) is a Fram G3515.  The body is
3/4" dia x 1-3/4", with a 15/16" flange at one end; overall length
including fittings is 3".  The fittings unfortunately are for 5/16" ID
hose... kind of big.  The filter reduces the pump delivery by 15% or so;
I'm about to saw it open to see what kind of element it has (hopefully
pleated paper).  I also have a lawnmower filter that's 5/8" dia x 2" but
I fear it's just a mesh strainer inside... will also submit it to the
bandsaw and let you know the results.

Would it help if we put an endplate on the upper side of the impeller?
This would seem to reduce the tendency of the bubble to get sucked into
the center of the impeller from above.  I may give it a try.
