Machine Builds

  •  Gordon and Betty
    • hand builds;  modifications are in the shop but not an official shop work order
    • some parts simply made incorrectly (El Camiino)
    • Cheri will put into system today and we will prioritize
  • Shallow lids
    • simply use different port on lid so no modification needed.
    • will use old power hole for Gene's pressure transducer
    • Bottom line:  No new hole in lids.  Doug looking into whether there is a seal available.
  • Light Puck
    • The Phase config file was to be machine independent.  But now we're seeing differences in cameras, so Brent's putting a machine-specific 'multiplier' into the phase config that references each individual camera.
    • In the light puck vs. matched-array comparison, results are difficult to interpret.  Will be using matched-array results so we will have instrument-specific calibrations--not ideal.  For the moment, every machine has its own calibration & we'll multiply to make them the 'same'.  Eventually the calibration will be empirically derived.
  • Bruce is out of focus.  Will not touch until after April 1 deployment.

MFB

  • MFB's to ship to McLane this PM.  Will ship without PCR tubing.

Drifter

  • Design review today at 1:30 to discuss issues that may impact the foam design
  • 1st test deployment is May 14.
  • Must mount in ESP can:  pressure transducer, accelerometer, serial->ethernet, ethernet hub and extender.  Gene to work with Scott and Doug on this.
  • Top-side
    • Cable goes to slip-ring -> eventually to host board that'll talk to Iridium modem.  Host boards on top will need DHCP-otherwise we need to assign static IP addresses
    • Gene has found that modems are soon to be obsolete--Dec 2009.  $1750 ea/ we need 2.   Gene looking into buying new vs. old.  We could simply borrow one for test deployments.
    • Brent wants to get old phone modems to do testing that will exercise our software.
    • Plan is to use lead-acid batteries in plastic pipe.  This setup is putting off the ultimate alkaline battery pack build.
    • NEXT meeting will update on fitting stuff into core.

Software

  •  dPress boards; still can't read registers.  Wayne working on.
  • Brent not started on DWSM yet.

Deep ESP

Sphere
  • Spider construction.  All parts are machine shop.  Will be finished today.
  • Frank F. will do welding week after next in the high-bay.  We'll have to get the sphere bottom out of its crate for that.
Elevator
  • Foam should be ready March 15.
  • Frame has been shipped to LA for heat treating.
  • doug has ordered shock-load feet.

DWSM

  • spider being welded today.  sphere bottom is in machine shop.
  • Power budget for modems not figured yet.  this is critical path for June deployments, not earlier.
  • interface boards ready next week.
  • Big issue is high pressure pump:
    • 2 pumps are bad:  1st is being repaired--stuck piston, 2nd showing same issues.  Either too much air in it or debris.  Doug waiting to hear from manufacturer on why they aren't working and he has some ideas for modifying pump.
    • 1 bad motor--melted plastic inside, but then broke free; it now 'works', but is not trustworthy enough to deploy.
  • Much discussion on whether we should have a timed or thermal time-out in software to shut pump down.  I was unclear what was decided.

Other Items:

  •  Van:  not leveled yet.
  • June cruise we hope to go to 2900m.  Axial will be 1600-1800m.
  •  Will get Mack into cold-testing March 16.  Do we switch syringes to cold-rated syringes?  I was unclear what was decided.
  • GG will be core used to do sphere fitting, next week.
  • Pfeiffer turbo pump will be serviced.  Factory (not NST) calibration is fine.
  • Chris S. pressuring Vrijenhoek on whether they want to use HV pucks.  Chris will find out what Bob wants and how many. 
  • Scott will submit order for retainer rings.
