ESP weekly meeting (Dec 20, 2007)

Present: Cheri, Scott, Chris P., Jim, Addie, Chris S.

Tech Transfer

   Light seals changed?
yes

•    Status of slow-running intake
Need to check this out with GG.  Science may not be needing it; Chris will Check. Scotts concerned that lower pressure sensor has changed its calibration by 50%.  Would like to remove it to look for fouling.  Chris mentioned 'blowing-up' a fragile bug because of larger pressure differential; sensor could be culprit.

ACTION: is science finished with GG (Chris S)

ACTION: remove GG lower pressure sensor and examine (Scott)

•    Status of manipulator hands.  How many needed?  How many made?  Where are those installed?  Waiting on any parts for hand?
Still futzing with first redesigned hand.  Very touchy assembly. Have 3 built but have found a problem with cam motor-mount.

ACTION:  meet with Mike Parker to discuss the cam assembly and redesign of the cam motor mount.  Decide about the assembly (Scott)

•    Status of motors and motor-mounts?
Have all motors.  Have all mounts.  Mike is modifying encoder gears.

•    Any questions about published timeline?
Will be using piezo-arrays for all these testings.

ACTION:  Need a Gantt chart of instrument usage (Jim)

•    Status of cold-rated syringes?
they sent a drawing of what they planned on doing (2 weeks ago?).  Scott replied; do it.  Haven't heard from them yet.

ACTION: call and find out where they are (Scott)

•    Status of Dwarf Board order?

ACTION: Must check with Jose.  He's adding up inventory.  Will need enough for 2 cores and 8 MFB and spares (at least 1 full core and enough spares for 8 MFB's[3 dwarves, 2 R's]).  Tally up, look at production run, and scale up for best economy.  Will place order early January. (Scott)

•    Discussion of IP tech transfer w/ LLNL?
Update:  we have written agreement with LLNL that UH, WHOI, is aproved.  Foreign use is unknown and Patrice is looking into it.  Valve design TBD

ACTION:  Clarify IP on valve design (Chris)

MFB
•    What will be MFB status as of 12-21-07?
Solid phase extraction working well.  Running through lysate coil on AIV.  Slug still shows a gradient, first 100ul good, second 100ul (over column) has high concentration.  Going to try just pushing 100ul through.  Unable to find mixing chambers, so will only take 100, push to and fro a few times and it'll be mixed.  Chris P thinks it may be TOO concentrated, bench rocovery is 12-25ug, and extrction is 25ug minimum.  Still tweaking this.  This will be January focus.  Standardize the protocol for this.

•    When will all parts be in for 2nd MFB?
All parts are in except MAXON motors.   Cheri ordered 33 total, 27 for her and 6 for Addie (who has used 4, 2 are around MBARI) and needs to order 6 more.  Cheri will use 24 w/ 1 spare apiece.

ACTION:  place order with MAXON for MFB spares (Addie)

•    What is left in extraction protocol?  Finalization of protocols will be early January.

Chris Scholin hosting CMORE workshop Jan. 14-17 (35 people from OR, HI, WHOI) to define functional requirements for our and other partners CMORE work.  Suggests that we clean up MFB and put on cart, and do a demo run.  Get rid of power board and zip tie things and tubing wraps, etc.

Dscussion about LLNL, when they will get a new block to us.  If we get the driver block, we should have it out for display.

Discussion about PSV valve.  Addie will add the PSV valve.  Discussion about connections b/w core and MFB.

ACTION: Should talk to VICI about putting new connector in  AIVports 3, 5, 6, to allow us to connect to 1/4-28 core fittings.  Or see if we can use existing MFB tubing and see if compression fitting works to the 1/4-28 connections. Addie will figure out how to connect ports 3, 5, 6 with no bubbles. (Addie)

ACTION:  Lubricating syringe.  Must be 'upside-down' to prime with no air bubbles.  But then could rotate 180 so it retains lubricant. Investigate remounting this right-side up after priming (Addie & Scott)

ACTION:  Change PSR name to ASR and change scripts. We need a naming convention for the 3-ways on the MFB.  Brent needs to be brought in on this (Scott will email)

Software
Brent gone until Jan 2nd.

Sphere and 4K DWSMS
•    Sphere ordered by Jon Erikson on Dec 13, 2007.

Funny Money Expenditures
•    Currently getting quote on 3 cans/endcaps; do we need for current year?

We have two complete surface moorings (although one can is a 'spare').  Will turn off mooring hardware PO from 2006.
•    Pucks?

Mike will have a quote tomorrow.
big expenses should go through Chris S for spreading charges among accounts.

Issues from Doug:

•    Serial numbering of pucks.

ACTION: Collect and inventory all pucks (Chris S to get Nilo).  Then will send 1/2 to Mike Parker to be etched (Scott)

•    Image reflections on puck.  Still and issue?
no
•    Concern on cleanliness of SSfittings off deep chamber
We are only using electrical connctors, not fluid connectors. May have to order fluid fittings for 'box test'.

ACTION: look into need for new fluid fittings and order if necessary (Cheri)

•    Pressure pots; rust source?
Will clean and should be okay.

ACTION: Cheri to get pressure pot sizes to figure box structure. (Cheri)

ACTION:  Pressure posts. We want this inventory: 2 fives, 2 tens, 2 threes.  Must order enough to reach this inventory (Chris P)

•    Battery/power issues for spring deployments
stick with alkaline.  Do we need more boxes?  Need 4 boxes initially.  Not working on low power issues.  Must order minimum of 1 box of batteries in early 2008.

4K stuff:
1. I have lower, more reasonable quotes for the sample chambers, but
they're trepanning solid stock so it's still pricey. It is something
that we could do or have El Camino do instead. I'll need to touch base
with Mike to see if it's worth while. Maybe a competitive quote from El
Cam.
2. We don't have a lot of time (20 weeks lead time on these) but I'm
looking into a steel housing to proof the system before. End caps and
penetrators would still be TI, but $40k would buy a lot.
3. I've made some small (but measureable with an interferometer)
progress on the 1k article.

Timeline (This schedule is its own page in Confluence):
1.  Cold Test Bruce with his new hand and re-valve Mack with new motors and mounts
(2 weeks; Dec 31--->Jan 15)
2. Cold test Mack w/ his new valves/hand and re-valve both Bruce and Neo (2 weeks; Jan 15-->Jan 29)
3. Begin 1 month test in chamber with MACK (~4 weeks; Feb 1-->Feb 25)
          * Cheri to design and construct box
          * Use fittings from deep canister
          * sample pressure pots
4. Prep for Spring deployments (Feb 25-->Feb 29)
5. Deploy MACK (March 3)
          * Cold test Bruce (Mar 3 - Mar 17) and Neo (Mar 17 - Apr 1)
6.  Recover MACK, Deploy BRUCE (Apr 1)
7.  Recover BRUCE, Deploy MACK (May 1)
8. Recover MACK (May 27), Deploy both BRUCE and NEO (May 28)
9. End mission Jun 30.

Cold testing of Bruce is really just 'hand' cold-testing.  Valving and tubing tests commence with Mack.

Items Pending:

battery box
stedim bags for aqualung
Chris P. must work with Brent before spring deployments to solve sampling problem
Chris P. and Brent need to address high volume issues for Sept deployment.
BIOSA integration as a contextual sensor.
Three new surface cans for 2008
