ESP Engineering Mtg -- Jan 24, 2008

11am-12
Present: Jim, Doug, Scott, Addie, Kevin, Brent, Chris S.

Tech Transfer

Discussion Items:
  • Results of hand/arm testing.  Hasn't shuffled pucks yet.  Almost finished testing
  • Update on valve cold-testing of MACK.  Still to begin
  • Jan 15-29 both Bruce & Neo to be re-valved.  Progress? Not begun yet
  • New hand order.  Plans update?  Mike ready to go to El Camino?  How many?  Not ready until cold-testing finished
  • New syringe cost.  Acct to charge?   50 syringes  ~$10K charge to 900612.  May start to identify people that want these new syringes (Chris S.)
  • New Dwarf Boards.  ~$4K/system with 6 week lead time.  Account?  How many?  Just a core, but all electronics (no MFB),  Jose should charge 900612 (look to see if he has time (Jim)  maybe a subaccount (.99 for CIP)).
  • Mock deployment schedule and Spring field trials
  • PROCUREMENT AND BUILD SCHEDULE FOR NEXT 2 CORES (WHOI & CMORE)

Two Options for build of two more cores:

Buy parts under another grant and then transfer charges to WHOI grant when money comes in in August 2008.  This is dangerous as WHOI may not get money and if we've bought ahead, we'd be stuck with parts, and have hit another grant very hard.
CMORE machine will initially be stationed here at MBARI but eventually goes to CMORE partner.  The best plan is to use BRUCE/MACK as the WHOI & CMORE machines, and have parts for their replacements on hand.

Chris thinks--do we know what we need to order.  Get all ready to cut and look to mid-summer for procurement and build starting in Sept.  By that time more money comes through and we could add to the purchases.  This applies to all Jose's boards except the MFB boards.  Now we should order enough dwarfs for MFB and spares. For MFB boards split between 701312 and 800560.  Make sure subaccount charges are correct.  The summer order would be the rest and the long-lead orders.

Second MFB is parted and here.  Chris and Jim will work with grants to make sure money is spent correctly (reallocate MOORE monies).

Neo has been capitalized so buying any more parts goes to a different account (maintenance or equipment supplies, not the NEO CIP account).

Q1-Q2 2008 schedule has slipped.  Must shift our schedule back one month.  Maybe can shave mock-deployment by running harder/faster.

ACTION:  Will cast a new schedule taking into account our current progress (Jim/Cheri/Scott)

Action Items

ACTION:  Order fluidic fittings for cores and MFB (Cheri)  In progress:

Action Items from last week:

ACTION: check with Jose about number of dwarves to order (Scott)  In progress:  Jose has mad the first pass through and looks like all components are still available.  Jose getting price and lead time on everything.
ACTION:  meet with Mike Parker to discuss the cam assembly and redesign of the cam motor mount.  Decide about the assembly (Scott)  In progress
ACTION:  Will rev the drawing and have El Camino make enough to retrofit all hands (Doug)  In progress
ACTION: Will drill out pressure sensor holes in clamps when we revalve the cores. (Scott/Cheri)  In progress

MFB

Discussion Items:

  • Motor control cables lengthened?  Finished

problem in cable that goes to 3-way valve.  Jose can't figure it out.

ACTION: Will work on figuring cable problem. (Addie)

  • Heater block re-plumbed?  Owner's manual written detailing new drivers?
  • Begin PCR tests?.

LLNL commands are now in Ruby (via Bob Herlien) and Addie has placed on Confluence a 'users manual' for the PCR module.  Software works well and easy to write scripts.

Fan not working on PCR module and Addie will try and track down why (check in various terminal/call LLNL) bob said he's never had the fan turn on or off with that module. (Addie)

ACTION: write Tony at LLNL for advice. FINISHED

Mike will bore out stator on the mixing column so we don't need more mix tubing or reducing fittings. (Addie)

Software

  • Gain/offset for heating cycles installed?  Still trying to test
  • Has 'Cheat Sheet' for new sample collection parameters been distributed? (Not done)
  • Firmware updated on Mack, Bruck & Neo? still testing

Action Items:
ACTION:  Put in mechanism for setting gain/offset before heating cycles (Brent): implemented but figuring when it should happen.
ACTION:  Write 'cheat sheet' showing new parameter available for changing during sample collection (Brent)
ACTION:  Update firmware on Mack, Bruce, Neo with the 'slightly modified version, and email the changes within this new firmware to everyone (Brent) DONE

Brent will work on operational model for temp control.  Get it ready for Sept that will be implemented with the MFB. (Brent)

Action Items from last week:

ACTION: Set-up sleepy board and an elmo on desk to emulate (Brent)  In progress: Can't find elmo but have other pieces.
ACTION:  working on a cue of interrupts in the threading environment--[low priority] (Brent): Not started
ACTION:  Work with the auto-cal code for carosal and aligment (Brent):  Medium priority Not started
ACTION:  Speak with Wayne about his timeline with BIOSA and his ability to commit to low-power studies for us.  (Jim): In progress

Sphere and 4K DWSMS

  • Oil cold testing.  Finished?  100 cst goes 150 cst when in cold.  It's a significant increase but can be counterd by buying lower viscosity oil.
  •
  • Screen drawings.  Checked?  Ready for order?  Photofab drawings have been looked at and they have a new spec to send to PFI.  The way they fabbed last time they took out too much b/w holes.  Doug wants them etched to a certain mass.

ACTION:  Scott to send samples and current idea to see if they can do it to weight. (Scott will mail samples to them)  Chris and Roman have spec for scintered frits and are discussing how many to order.  They have a quote.

  • Battery boxes?  Scott still waiting to hear.
  • DWSM progress?   Have ~$1300 of parts coming into lab to build lung system.  Going into Bldg B lab.  pumps not coming in yet, but will find hand-pumps.  Will start construction next week.  Maybe need some days of Jim S.

No word on sphere.  Discussion about Tapemation machining and how we should get insurance or discuss protection.

ACTION:  Go back to Mark Brown and ask who we should go with (Jim)

ACTION:  get inventory of screens from Roman (Jim): Must spec hole size and fix original drawings and talk to manufacturer before ordering.  In progress
ACTION:  Order two battery boxes (w/out batteries)--~$4K; account #701312.04: In progress:  Scott waiting for lower price

GUI Development

  • Mission script progress

ACTION:  Will try and have mission script GUI out next week.  Kevin will meet with Chris S. (Kevin)

  • Adjustment of project #'s in JIRA

ACTION: Kevin will delete one account and the one to use is ESP Gen II. FINISHED

On Table:

Chris P. must work with Brent before spring deployments to solve sampling problem
Chris P. and Brent need to address high volume issues for Sept deployment.
BIOSA integration as a contextual sensor.  ACTION: how will BIOSA integrate and drivers needed (Brent & Wayne)
