Deployment Update

  • Thanks to all on an awesome deployment
  • Post-can QC:
    • Bruce has a leak, so images not looking good.  South Carolina wants to do some tests; if we can do in 1 week great, otherwise should send their reagents back.  Cheri back on Monday and will work on finding leak.
    • Errors during deployment:
    • Bruce: puck failed to go to camera seal
    • Bruce: developed leak on processing side
    • Mack: error on removing flush puck from garage
       
  • Chris & Scott will work on tracking down the bad puck Bruce had during the deployment to see if there's a smoking gun...
     

Machine Builds

  • harmonic drive has been running all week; working better, but Scott needs to check it more closely. 

MFB

  •  Addie: wil check with Jose about status of voltage regulator boards
  • 64MB host boards (4) ordered; host ribbon cables ordered
  • Lots of work for Jose that may require formal work request.  Jim will check with Mark Brown
    • measuring for wire harness; MBARI will build 2, rest will be sent out
    • after these measurements, Jose/Scott will do schematic
    • Jose will also be involved with serial connector to PCR builds and making 1 connector joining Grill to core or to stand-alone power supply.
  • Jim will contact LLNL about January PCR module delivery
  • NAMING CONVENTION:  Grills will be sequentially numbered starting with MFB01.  Subsequent will be MFB02, MFB03, MFB04, etc.

Software

  •  If we decide to roll-out new Ruby code, it is better to do earlier than later as we'll need a stable platform by March.  Must meet with Brent for debugging NEO results.

DWSM

Sphere
  •  Roughly 2 weeks machining left
    • bottom is off lathe and in mill; finishing ports
    • top is in lathe; found a void--worried there may be others.  Waiting on X-ray quote from Tapemation.  Doug to notify Wah Chang, who may be responsible for repair.
  • will be using vulcanized assembled O-rings @ $15/each.
  • Fasteners to be ordered--Ti vs. SS; still getting prices and lead times, but whether we go on Northern expedition or go on MARS will influence which we purchase
  • bulkhead penetrations still to be made in-house;  will talk to Scott about min-K connectors
  • Where will sphere sit upon delivery? Will ask about back of Larry's space or storing in high-bay.
DWSM
  • Build has begun; currently waiting on Dean's valve parts
  • much testing can be done with current dwarves; all boards for testing are available through Dick.

GUI Development

  • GUI is now parsing data.  Kevin wants to store in Alfresco since this is accessible via the web to outsiders without having to give out MBARI accounts.

Other Items:

  • Bldg B lab will eventually need cleaning; Doug has his space along east wall; center will be where cores sit. 

2009 deployment schedule looks like this :

  • Winter/Spring -- series of DWSM/sphere test deployments.  Last will be a Flyer deployment (5 days?), then several week break, then Northern Expedition in July.
  •  Spring -- series of S. California pier deployments; dates and lengths flexible, but likely 3 machines in three different cities for 1 month
  • End of 2009 -- MARS deployment
  •  Above could change if N. Expedition gets canceled due to budget issues.  Will know more after Nov. 13 Packard Board mtg.

Regarding Bruce's post can QC errors:

Roman and I now believe that the camera seal did not go to the DA puck

rather than the other way 'round If you look at the high-res image

one can plainly see that the puck is bright and blurry, but the filter spots

are in focus. Is it possible that the camera seal spring loaded seal mechanism

got stuck? Note that, if this were to happen in the can, we probably would not

even notice it, as it would be already very dark in there anyway.

If we don't think the mechanism got stuck, we should do some tests do determine

how far out of position the elevator would have to be to yield an image like the

one observed. (spots in focus with puck body clearly visible)

Regarding Mack's hand being unable to pull the flush puck from its garage:

The forearm was barely moving with high current levels when these errors occurred.

Recall the the current limit on the Forearm axis is set so high that an overcurrent cannot

occur unless the motor short circuits. The upshot is that the forearm was stuck.

Could the ball bearing spring mechanism that holds the flushpuck in place be sticking

in the "up" position?

I just tried to manually remove the flush puck from its garage on Mack

and Bruce.  Bruce had the normal detent.  Mack's appeared to be stuck in its garage. 

I did not remove it so others could compare.

Interesting idea about flush pucks being stuck.  Chris and I gave them a good scrubbing before deployment....

Spoke with Mark Brown about our need for considerable Jose time; he said just talk to Jose who, if too overloaded, will go to Mark.  I will try and see him tomorrow (Friday)
