Week 10: Hi guys. I added the page for the last week... This week I made my oral presentation. I had a lot of comments from various mentors about my slides, so the process took a long time. I saw my slides visually and practiced with a microphone and laser pointer on Monday. I also finished my plots on Monday including getting p-values for some regression lines and making a very complex contour plot. On Tuesday, I reviewed the literature again to come up with my summary & conclusion slide comparing my result to that of other regions. I also worked with the CeNCOOS team on the webpage to describe dissolved oxygen and trends, and got some feedback. I met with Francisco for an hour to discuss my presentation, my future plans, and my work with the model that I did not present in my presentation. On Wednesday, I listened to all of the intern presentations. I also received word in the morning that I was accepted as an oral presenter at the EPOC (Eastern Pacific Ocean Conference) this September in Lake Tahoe. Today is Thursday. I am writing my paper, working on the CeNCOOS webpage, meeting with people to follow up on discussions or side projects I had open, preparing some scripts to leave behind at CeNCOOS, working on a collaborator's agreement, returning things to people, ... and I will continue to do this on Friday. This week I practiced my presentation a couple of times with my lab which helped me explain my project as clearly and concisely as I could! It was definitely a challenge to stick to the 12 min time slot but in the end it seemed like a really good length. I'm working on my paper now. I'll be really sad to leave MBARI tomorrow, but I'm hopeful that I'll be able to come back to see the new laser coming to the Brewer Lab and maybe even help out with another cruise. Week Ten: I mistakenly assumed that last weeks confluence update was the last, my apologies. This week has been a time crunch, Monday I was able to complete my vehicle supports and was finally able to apply a fraction of my procedure. Tuesday I spent entirely on revisions and refinement of my presentation. Wednesday we had our final presentations and as nerve racking as it was everyone nailed their project presentation, the one minute summary on the other hand was surprisingly much more challenging. It has been an excellent experience here at MBARI, I honestly can't express how genuinely helpful and kind everyone here has been. Not to mention how spoiled I have become this summer given the beach-front location, weekly cookie breaks, amazing seminars and $3 BBQ's. It has been very rewarding and a great pleasure to have been a part of this summers Internship program. Thank you to everyone who helped me this summer and special thanks to George and Linda for making this possible and also Brett and Ben for the guidance throughout my experience. Week ten: This week has had a mix of feelings. First, I was in a hurry to finish my presentation. Then, nervous to make a good presentation and even more so people could understand me. And finally, excited about how I could explain part of the work that I developed during my internship. Moreover, the interview was interesting. I really can't put into words how incredible I think this summer was...but I'll do my best. One word that broadly sums this experience up is life-changing. This was life-changing in every single way and I can not be more grateful to have gone through it with the greatest group of people I've ever had the pleasure of working with. Everyone's presentations were amazing and, to be the Drew of the party, I am proud to have known you all before you go out into the world and do amazing things. You are all so bright and passionate, there isn't anything you can't do and I believe that wholeheartedly. I'm going to dearly miss walking the halls of MBARI almost every day, but all good things must come to an end and I am so thankful to have had something in my life that I would miss this much. It's difficult to come to terms that the internship has actually come to an end. I just want to thank you all for making my last 10 weeks, the most amazing and memorable. I have learnt a lot, improved a lot and made some amazing amazing friends. Each one of you is gonna do something amazing ahead and I just hope at some point our work and life intersects. Week 10: This past week I focused on my presentation, and though I was very nervous, with constructive comments from Steve, George, Lynne, Danielle, and Darrin, I think it went very well in the end 10 weeks can sure fly by, but I think we made the most of it! I'm thankful to all of you for a truly amazing summer and for all of your sage life advice. I'm lucky to have met such accomplished people and to be able to take advantage of your experience as I try to figure myself out. Thanks also to George, Linda, Steve, and all MBARI for affording me this opportunity to learn and grow. . Well, but now I need to finish my paper and wait for my Mom!!.
. I am almost done with my final paper (I promise I will send it to you tomorrow night!) I just have to add to the conclusion. I really enjoyed giving my final presentation this week but it was very difficult to say goodbye to everyone after. I really enjoyed my time here at MBARI and learned so much from everyone.
