Using with a Project

Here are some instructions for using ArcMapNav with a project. For this example, I am creating a new Map project. Start up ArcGIS Pro and you will be presented with option of opening a recent project or starting a new one (you might have to log in to ArcGIS first). Under New Project, click on Map.

New Project

Give the project a name and click on OK

Project Name

The new project will open to a map, but you will not see the ArcMapNav panel by default.

New Project Start

To see the ArcMapNav panel, click on the ArcMap Nav menu item at the top and this will show the ArcMapNav toolbar, then click on the Show button to open the ArcMapNav panel in your project.

Open ArcMapNav Panel

If you are going to be using the Markpoints feature, you will first want to add the Geodatabase to your project where the markpoints are stored. You can see that location in the greyed out text box at the bottom of the panel.

Geodatabase Location

Once you know that path, click on the Map menu item at the top, then click on the button to Add Data. This will open a file chooser and you can navigate to the directory from the previous step and you should see a file named ArcMapNav-Markpoints.gdb.

Add Geodatabase

Double click on the ArcMapNav-Markpoints.gdb file and it will show you the ArcMapNavMarkpoints feature table. Select that and then click on OK.

Add Feature Table

Once the Geodatabase has been added, if you click on the Contents tab in the lower left hand corner, you will see the new ArcMapNavMarkpoints added and it should be selected by default and the markpoints should appear on the map. If you want a detailed look at the markpoints, right-click on the ArcMapNavMarkpoints name and select Attribute Table.

Select Attribute Table

This will open a new table below your map showing you a table of all the markpoints.

Markpoint Table

If you zoom in on the location where the markpoints are and select the markpoints in the table, they will highlight on the map.

Markpoint Select

By the way, you can turn on/off the markpoints by checking/unchecking the box next to the ArcMapNavMarkpoints in the Contents pane.

Next, let's look at the ship and ROV track controls. Click on the ArcMapNav tab in the lower left hand corner to bring the ArcMapNav pane back into view. In order to see the ship and ROV on the map, check the boxes under Ship and ROV.

Ship ROV on

This will start drawing the track of the Ship and ROV. Note that the controls next to the checkboxes will change the size of the ship and ROV icons.

Change Icon Size

Also, the boxes next to the icon size controls will change the length of the trail behind the ship and ROV independently. The numbers in the box are in minutes.

Change Tail Length

The Markpoint control group lets you control when and how to add markpoints to the geodatabase (and the map). There are three basic ways to add markpoints. First, you can enable a timer to just record markpoints every so many minutes for the selected platform. To do this:

  1. Choose the platform you wish to use for markpoint creation (Ship or ROV)
  2. Set the control to indicate how many minutes you want between auto generated markpoints.
  3. Check the box next to Auto On/Off and the timer will start and markpoints will be added.
  4. Uncheck the box to stop the auto generation of markpoints.

Auto MP

The next way is to just create one markpoint where the currently selected platform is located. To do this:

  1. Make sure you have the correct platform selected.
  2. Click on the Grab 1 button.

Grab One

Lastly, you can just turn on a mode that will allow you to create markpoints wherever you click the mouse. To do this:

  1. Check the box labeled Manual On/Off. The cursor will change to a crosshair and then click on the location(s) where you want the markpoint located.
  2. Uncheck the box to go back to normal map exploring mode.

Manual Markpoint

If you want to add a comment to any of the above markpoint methods, just type a comment in the MP Comment field and this will be added to any new markpoints that are generated.

Markpoint Comment

One nice feature is that if some of the markpoints being generated are not wanted, you can directly edit the entries in the table below the map.

Note

One thing to be aware of is that when any changes are being made to the geodatabase, those are by default done in Edit mode and are not saved automatically. You can either save them by going to the Edit menu and clicking on Save, setting up the option in your project to auto-save edits, or you will be prompted to save them when you close the project. Since we tend to have these maps up for long periods of time, I would suggest you set up auto saving edits (not described here).
